When faced with a good rum, it is not uncommon to find yourself helpless when it comes to deciding which glass will hold your precious spirits. How to choose a rum glass that will magnify the aromas and flavours of your elixir of the sun? Because indeed, rum is not to be enjoyed in just any glass for aperitif or liqueur. To get the most out of the olfactory and gustatory potential of your rum, it is imperative to choose a Rum glass with very precise technical qualities.
To begin with, in order to fully appreciate the amber or silver colour of your rum, it is imperative to choose a glass with absolute transparency. This is to prevent unsightly colouring of the glass from distorting the colour palette of your rum.
After observation, it's time for tasting! This is where the shape of your rum glass will play an absolutely essential role. Generally speaking, it is advisable to use a stemmed glass, which avoids grasping the glass by the bowl and thus warming up the contents. The base of the bowl must be wide enough to allow the rum to be well oxygenated. This surface of oxygenation which is then created in the glass (the surface of the liquid in contact with the air) allows the aromas of your rum to develop and release all their potential. Thus, the wider the glass, the faster the oxygenation of your spirit will be. But beware! A glass that is too wide will have a negative effect on the quality of your tasting. In addition to over-oxygenating your rum, its volatile aromas are likely to escape. It is therefore advisable to choose a glass with a limited capacity (between 16cl and 35 cl maximum) and with a narrowed glass at the top of the bowl. This tightened glass forms a chimney on the upper part of the glass, which both prevents the aromas of your rum from escaping and allows a good concentration of all the flavours when tasting it.
Last but not least! For optimum tasting comfort, it is recommended to choose a glass with a sheer rim for a pleasant feeling of lightness during tasting.
